Jan 2024: 0,005 ETH × 2.100 € = 10,50 € Feb 2024: 0,005 ETH × 2.300 € = 11,50 € ... Dez 2024: 0,005 ETH × 3.200 € = 16,00 € —————————————————————————————— Gesamt: 0,06 ETH = 180,00 €
Staking-Rewards 2024: 180 € Sonstige Einkünfte gesamt: 180 € Freigrenze (§ 22 Nr. 3): 256 € —————————————————————————————— Steuerpflichtig: 0 € ✓

Was, wenn meine Staking-Rewards 300 € ergeben?

ETH Staking Rewards Tax (US): IRS Rev. Rul. 2023-14 Explained

In the US, staking rewards are taxed as ordinary income in the year you receive them — at fair market value. There is no de minimis threshold (unlike Germany’s €256 rule). Here’s exactly how 0.06 ETH in staking rewards is taxed under IRS guidance.

IRS Rev. Rul. 2023-14: The Controlling Rule

The IRS clarified in Revenue Ruling 2023-14 that staking rewards are includible in gross income as ordinary income in the year received, at fair market value. This applies to both proof-of-stake validators and delegators.

Step 1Calculate FMV at Receipt
Each reward must be valued at market price when received:
Jan 2024: 0.005 ETH × $2,100 = $10.50 Feb 2024: 0.005 ETH × $2,300 = $11.50 ... Dec 2024: 0.005 ETH × $3,200 = $16.00 —————————————————————————————— Total: 0.06 ETH = $180.00
(simplified example — actual amounts vary with ETH price at each receipt date)
Step 2Report as Ordinary Income
The $180 total is taxed at your ordinary income rate — same rate as wages:
Staking rewards: $180 Tax bracket (22%): × 0.22 —————————————————————————————— Tax owed (est.): $39.60 Reported on: Schedule 1, Line 8z ("Other Income — describe: Crypto staking rewards")
No threshold: even $1 of staking income is taxable in the US
Step 3Cost Basis and Later Sale
Key rule: After paying income tax, the FMV at receipt becomes your cost basis for the ETH. When you later sell, only the additional gain is taxed:
Received: 0.06 ETH @ avg $3,000 = $180 (taxed as income) Later sell: 0.06 ETH @ $4,000 = $240 Capital gain: $240 – $180 = $60 Holding period: from receipt date If > 1 year held → long-term capital gain ($60 at 0/15/20%) If < 1 year held → short-term capital gain ($60 at ordinary rate)
You pay income tax when you receive the reward, capital gains tax when you sell
Result: Staking 2024 (US)
Rewards received0.06 ETH = $180
Tax treatmentOrdinary income (all $180)
Tax owed (22% bracket)$39.60
Report onSchedule 1, Line 8z
Cost basis established$180 (for future sale)
Germany comparison: In Germany, staking rewards are also taxed as ordinary income — but only if total “sonstige Einkünfte” exceeds €256/year. In the US there is no such threshold. Every dollar of staking income is taxable, no matter how small.
Important: IRS Rev. Rul. 2023-14 is clear, but the IRS is still developing detailed guidance on staking. Some edge cases (liquid staking tokens, re-staking protocols) may have different treatment. Consult a tax professional for complex staking arrangements.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this apply to all proof-of-stake coins, not just ETH?

Yes — IRS Rev. Rul. 2023-14 applies broadly to staking rewards from any proof-of-stake network where you have dominion and control over the rewards. SOL, ADA, ATOM, DOT staking rewards are all treated the same way.

What if I use a liquid staking protocol like Lido or Rocket Pool?

The income tax treatment is the same — rewards are ordinary income when received. However, receiving stETH or rETH tokens may trigger additional questions about when rewards are “received.” Many practitioners treat the accrual as ongoing income; others recognize it on redemption. This area lacks definitive IRS guidance.

Can I deduct the cost of staking hardware or fees?

For hobby staking, deductions are not available after the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (2018). For commercial staking operations treated as self-employment, business expenses (hardware, electricity, software) may be deductible on Schedule C, and net income is subject to self-employment tax.
