Zum kostenlosen Rechner →In the US, crypto is treated as property under IRS Notice 2014-21. Every sale is a taxable event. The tax rate depends on how long you held the asset — short-term (under 1 year) is taxed as ordinary income, long-term (over 1 year) at preferred rates.
Calculate your own Bitcoin tax in the calculator →If you had sold after January 16, 2025 (more than 1 year), the $15,000 gain would be a long-term capital gain — taxed at 0%, 15%, or 20% depending on your income.
Do I need to report this on my tax return?
Yes. All crypto disposals must be reported on Form 8949 and summarized on Schedule D. Starting in 2025, brokers are required to issue 1099-DA forms for crypto. Failure to report can result in penalties and interest.
What if I also had crypto losses this year?
Capital losses offset capital gains dollar-for-dollar. If you had a $5,000 loss on another coin, your net taxable gain would be $10,000. If total losses exceed total gains, up to $3,000 can be deducted against ordinary income per year; the excess carries forward indefinitely.
How do I prove my cost basis?
Keep all purchase confirmations, exchange statements, and wallet records. The IRS permits FIFO, HIFO, or specific identification — you must be consistent. Without documentation, the IRS can treat your cost basis as $0, making the full proceeds taxable.
